Open letter of the Stiftung Friedliche Revolution Leipzig (Foundation Peaceful Revolution, Leipzig), proclaimed during the Prayer for Peace of the Nikolai Church on 7 February 2011

With their courageous commitment to freedom and democracy in the fall of 1989 the people of the former GDR brought down the regime of the SED (Socialist Unity Party) and thereby made possible the reunification of the two German states. After many citizens had prayed in their churches for a spirit of nonviolence, the people took to the streets peacefully with the slogans, “We are the people” and “No violence.” They overcame their fear and placed their hope in nonviolent change.

In spite of many differences, the contemporary events in Tunisia, Yemen and especially Egypt strongly recall the days of the Peaceful Revolution of 1989 in the GDR.

As the Foundation for Peaceful Revolution, therefore, we encourage you to continue your protests against state repression and paternalism using nonviolent means only. Creative peaceful protest can move mountains. This was experienced by the people of Germany and many parts of the former Eastern bloc countries in 1989, even though the state regimes with their repressive apparatuses appeared to be virtually invincible. In our experience the demands of the people for freedom and democracy can not be suppressed in the long run; the protest should, however, integrate if possible all political and social groups and must be carried out exclusively with nonviolent means and absolute renunciation of force. Just as our Monday prayers for peace gave us the strength to achieve peaceful change in the streets, so the Friday prayers could become a source of strength for you to demand changes in your country without violence.

Since 28 January 2011 we have watched on CNN police beating peaceful citizens with clubs, stones being hurled from the midst of the demonstrators, buildings in flames. Now we are hearing of plundering by criminal gangs and armed former convicts who terrorize the populace, and of a rapidly growing number of dead, injured and arrested persons.

We are convinced that counter-violence from the ranks of the demonstrators will only hinder the achievement of their justified demands for democracy by allowing provocateurs to divide the opposition, sow chaos and provide the regime with an excuse for harsh reaction.

We, and with us surely many persons the world over, were deeply moved when several rows of demonstrators threw themselves to the ground in prayer between the opposing sides of stone-throwing protesters to remind them through this impressive show of nonviolence that they should also be peaceful.

We declare our solidarity with those who reject violence, and we hope and pray that a solution to Egypt’s present problems will be found which will guarantee enduring stability, democracy and human rights.

We call upon the Mubarak regime to respect the will of the people and to set in motion the changes necessary to truly democratize the country. Any use of force, whether by police units or marauding groups must be avoided.

We appeal to the army to continue its avoidance of violence against the people.

We ask the government of Germany to support emphatically the peaceful action of the people in Egypt to attain freedom and democracy, and to refrain from all support of the ruling system in Egypt.
